The body makes bile acids from cholesterol. Increasing bile acid production results in a decrease in circulating cholesterol. Improvement in digestion also results from the increased bile flow. The active ingredient in Artichoke most affecting bile production is Cynarin. Other components of Artichoke have a mild diuretic effect.

In order to separate the several activities inherent in many herbal products, it is frequently desirable to produce dosage forms containing only the principal ingredient of interest. Thus, a finished product containing only purified Cynarin would be expected to stimulate bile secretion (and lower cholesterol) without the diuretic effect of whole artichoke extract.
